Northgate Shopping Centre closes as a precaution

NORTHGATE – No incidents have occurred yet but SAPS and Metro Police are on site.

Northgate Shopping Centre closed early this afternoon (July 14) as a safety precaution.

There were unconfirmed reports of a tip-off received by businesses that protesters were headed their way, and police and Metro police arrived to act as a deterrent should this happen.

These reports of the tip-off have not been verified with Northgate Shopping Centre yet.

Honeydew Community Policing Forum chairperson, Jon Rosenberg confirmed the mall was evacuated and closed but there have been no incidents yet.

The mall posted on Facebook, “Dear Shopper, please take note that the Centre has been evacuated and closed as a precautionary measure, until further notice.

“The safety of our shoppers, staff and tenants remain our top priority.
Our Security Team and SAPS are in contact, the area and surrounds are being monitored closely.
We hope to welcome you back soon!
Stay safe!

Other shopping centres and businesses in Joburg have closed in the last three days as a result of similar tip-offs, and as a precautionary measure. These include, among others, Randburg Square, Ferndale on Repulic, Randridge Mall and Boskruin Village Shopping Centre. Cresta Shopping Centre has shortened its operating hours for the rest of the week.
