Driver accused of hitting and killing a cyclist while under the influence is granted bail

KENSINGTON B – The driver hit both cyclists while under the influence, the state will argue.

The man who allegedly hit and killed a cyclist while driving under the influence has been granted bail by Randburg Magistrate’s Court

The 30-year-old student, whose name is known to Randburg Sun, is charged with culpable homicide, negligent driving, failing to render assistance, and driving under the influence after his Porsche SUV hit two cyclists on the R512 in Lanseria, with one of them dying on the scene.

The accused was arrested on scene.

Cyclists attended the court appearance, standing in the court parking lot with their gear and bicycles.

The accused was granted bail and has to report to his investigating officer if he would like to leave the province.

The case has been postponed to May 18.

It was on January 29, that André Piehl and Jean Francois du Preez were struck by the man’s vehicle.

“Medics found that one of the cyclists [Piehl] had been dragged under the car for 400m, and sadly showed no signs of life. He was declared deceased on the scene,” a Netcare 911 report said at the time.

“The second cyclist [Du Preez] had gone through the windscreen of the vehicle and sustained critical injuries. He required advanced life support interventions to be stabilised before he was transported to a specialist hospital by the Netcare 911 helicopter.”
