Things every recent graduate needs for adult life

Transitioning into adult life after graduating can be a difficult task for many graduates. What do you need at this stage of life?

Graduation, like most milestones, showcases the fact that you have reached a new level in your life where you have to start the career you had studied for. There are a lot of things you get exposed to when you are in tertiary that give you an introduction to what adulthood is like, but as soon as you are done with your studies, it is time to start living the real life. In this article, we will take a look at how you can better prepare for adult life.

First, money matters

You probably have seen and heard how financial literacy plays an important part in adulthood. But, don’t worry; you do not have to be a guru at it as the small basic steps help you figure out the bigger picture. You need to learn how to budget, how to spend, save and invest. Your financial literacy will help you sustain your income and make better money decisions. It is important to have a saving or investment account in order to have finances ready for rainy days. There are three ways you can divide your savings or investments. They are:

  1. A savings account that has funds readily available: This is for moments when you have an immediate emergency. This can be medical fees, car repair fees, insurance excess and more. You may want to add money regularly to this account; however, you can set a target not to go over so that you are able to finance your other savings or investment accounts.
  2. A savings account that will help finance you for 3-6 months should you lose employment/income: This can be an emergency funding account that will help you out should you find yourself in the unfortunate situation that you are unemployed. This money can be used to finance a car service, pay off extra on your mortgage or as a holiday reward should you not have to use it to sustain yourself. It is suggested that you save a certain amount from your salary, maybe 20% so that you can have enough yearly.
  3. An investment/retirement fund: While most employers offer retirement funds, there is nothing wrong with having your own one set up aside. This can help you travel, finance your next career or schooling or to relocate to anywhere once you decide to retire. This fund should often be locked away where you cannot have access to the money for a long period of time as this will help with your future.

These funds are just SOME of the things you need to know so that you are able to make conscious money decisions. Some people set up different emergency funds for different things, while others categorise them according to needs and wants. Decide what goals you want to achieve, and from there, you can deceive how you want to start saving and investing money. It is not easy, so always ensure that you forgive yourself for the little mistakes you will make while figuring out your financial self.

Stay ready, stay hungry, stay mobile

Part of being an adult requires fuelling your career with a lot of work. This means that you will need to put yourself out there, and that requires a bit, or a lot, of networking. You may need to be mobile and move around with ease when you need to grow yourself in your career, and having a car can help you out. As a graduate, you might be able to get the benefit of owning a car without having to worry about having a credit history. There are a few ways you can get financial assistance as a graduate should you ever need a car, and let’s be honest; there are many benefits of owning a car when you are a new graduate. Take advantage of the range of options you have, like graduate finance, and see if you are able to get your hands on your first set of wheels so that you can be at the right place, at the right time, all the time. There are many reasons graduates need a car, and all of them differ, so ensure that you have highlighted yours and why you should get yourself your wheels.

Health is wealth

When it comes to adulthood, it is important to have a health backup plan waiting for you. Ensure that you have medical aid or hospital cover waiting for when you have to be attended to medically, and also ensure that you insure your valuables so that in any unfortunate event, you are able to gain access to a professional that will help you through without having to worry about finances.

Assets are your best friend

As an adult, it is important to have certain things that sustain you, such as a car and home. So, try to invest in purchasing one big asset at a time. If you are looking for a car, then ensure that you focus on that purchase only for a period of time so that you are able to direct all your efforts to achieving this. Once that is done, you move on to another, and another, and so forth. Soon enough, you will be owning assets and will be able to have something to fall back on should you find yourself in unfortunate circumstances.

R & R

While adulthood prepares you for working hard and getting all your finances and admin in order, there is a need for you to relax from time to time. As an adult, you are in charge of a lot of things, and that may stress you out every now and then. Take time out occasionally to relax and take care of yourself. You can do something you like that relaxes you or try a new hobby. Doing this will help you recharge and refocus, and a lot of people use this time to plan out how to execute their short, medium and long term goals. There are lots of holiday packages for family and friends’ groups, so you and your loved ones can all go recharge together affordably.

Last but not least; community

As a graduate, you will find that you are surrounded by new knowledge to explore. Invest in aligning with people who share the same interests, views, and are also in the same career industry as you. Most people tend to move through life with the same set of friends, and we recommend doing the same too. You can add new people that will add to your knowledge and form an even bigger and stronger community.

Final words

Being an adult is not so scary if you are well-prepared. Remember, there are financial institutions that help graduates with vehicle finance and many other offerings. Take advantage of the opportunities that exist for new graduates and let your journey into adulthood be a smooth transition.
