A campaign to pull the plug on drugs
International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking came early in Honeydew as they say no to substance abuse.
On June 15, various stakeholders held a drug abuse awareness campaign at Honeydew sports ground.
Representatives of Sanca, Department of Social Development, Sassa, and Phola, an organisation that deals with trauma and its effects, were present. Ward councillor David Mangena welcomed the stakeholders and the Honeydew community.
Social worker at the Department of Social Development Thathane Ramphomane said, “We decided to bring services to the Honeydew community because it has been identified to be high on gender abuse and violence. And we also took note that some researchers say substance abuse leads to gender-based violence and gender-based violence leads to crime, and that is why we are here today.”

In support of the fight against drug abuse and trafficking pastor Nico Giwu of the department said the people’s hope is God.
“God is our last hope. It is important as pastors to join hands with the community and organisations by fighting against drug abuse by reverting to God in this issue and for pastors to invite people to church programmes,” he said.

“People should know that God is love and if they show up to his presence, they shall receive God’s love and mercy in this fight.”
Facilitator at African Youth Development Fund, Zibuyile Sibinya said, “We came here to assist you to pull that plug against substance abuse. I always say in the streets that we live with people infected with this…. but we as the affected, we need to go out there and look for help to assist them in pulling the plug.”
