Hope is bestowed in Fandis settlement
Douglasdale police share the hope of food security in the Fandis Settlement.
In honour of Mandela Day, the Douglasdale police recently hosted a Garden of Hope event in Fandis Settlement.
The aim of the day was to commemorate Mandela Day and ensure community food security with a garden brimming with fresh vegetables. Carrots, spinach, beetroot, and many more were planted on the day.

The police and Douglasdale CPF cooked soup for the community to treat them on the day. Station Commander Brigadier Veeshani Arikum said more than 80 litters of soup would be distributed to the community.

According to Lizzy Mabena, head of Douglasdale CPF, the goal was to also establish a secure environment between the community and Douglasdale police. “Nelson Mandela Day is a day of community initiative as well as community upliftment, we here to do collaboration not only on food security but as well as creating a platform of engagement between the community as well the police sector,” said Mabena.

She added that the Garden of Hope was initiated for the community in hopes to sustain those in need. “We sincerely hope the community takes care of the garden and uses it to provide food for the hungry households within the area.”

Fanyana Ncube, a resident, said they are appreciative of the gesture of hope made toward the neighborhood. “We are grateful and glad for the kindness Douglasdale police have shown us, and we aim to use the garden to give back to the community’s less fortunate members.”
