The Grade R learners from IR Griffith Primary School are entertained by the developmental and creative nature crafts their teacher had set out for them.
Following weeks filled with interesting educational facts about insects, the Grade Rs ended their week with a morning making colourful, beautiful butterflies while listening to the authentic sounds of nature.

The head of Grade R, Roxanne Kuhn, said they taught the learners that the most important fact about an insect was that they helped pollinate plants which was essential for reproducing a range of flowers and vegetables.

“We chose a nature butterfly as it is one of the most beautiful insects. We did this activity outside as they had to gather nature items such as sticks, leaves and different types of flowers. They really enjoyed hunting for these items,” says Kuhn.

She added the benefits of learning outside were that it helped relieve stress in children as it was a tranquil setting; it helped them to develop an understanding of the world around them; it developed inquisitive thinking in real-life situations; developed a love for nature; and, lastly, developed children holistically.

“The Grade Rs thoroughly enjoyed this activity and we concluded the day by singing a song about insects, which includes all the actions and sound effects.”
