Randburg Police Station commander urges residents to be safe during the silly season

Randburg Police Station Commander Brigadier Michelle Jones would like to wish all her members and the community a happy Christmas and a prosperous new year after the hard work they did throughout 2022.

The members’ effort saw a reduction in crime in the policing area – contact and property crime had been reduced drastically, according to the previously released crime statistics.

Reduced numbers in robberies with aggravating circumstances showed that the measures put in place had worked to prevent and combat this category.

Furthermore, Jones thanked detectives and the National Prosecuting Authority in making sure that many of those who were arrested are being prosecuted, especially on crime against women and children and the trio crimes (carjackings, house robberies and business robberies).

This year the station had convictions of more than 15 years’ imprisonment in a number of cases that were investigated.

“Although we still have challenges with our community’s involvement in policing, I would like to thank the Community Policing Forum with its sector forums for being involved and working hard in articulating the importance of partnership. That means bridging the gap between the police and its community,” Jones said.

“During this festive season I would like to encourages the community to be more vigilant when travelling and also when at home. The festive season is always a silly time where people become so relaxed.”

As many are going on holiday, Jones appealed to community members to:

• Ensure that security devices are in working condition.
• Ensure electric fences are in good and working condition.
• Ensure rubble is removed as usual.
• Always be on the lookout for suspicions people and vehicles.
• Request neighbours to keep an eye when you go away for an extended period.
• Do not leave anything visible inside the vehicles.
• When using remote to lock your car, please test all the doors before you leave.
• Do not keep too much cash in your possession, premises or business.
• Avoid confrontations.
• Do not drink and drive.

“And to those who were saving on stokvels, please request the banks to divide the savings through to your accounts, not to share on specific places to avoid being robbed,” Jones added.
