Randburg Harries brings back evening race

Randburg Harries marketing director Luthando Mhlahlo said the race also helps to promote local businesses

Randburg Harriers hosted the 33rd Valentines 10km Night Race on February 19 at Randburg Sports Complex.

Randburg Harriers marketing director Luthando Mhlahlo said the turnout was more than what they expected. “We had in excess of 1 900 runners for the event, however, families and supporters at the venue swelled the numbers to well over 2 000. Not forgetting that the community also came out in their numbers on the route to cheer and support runners on the route which made the experience even more unforgettable.”

The race hosted elite runners who can complete 10km in 30 minutes in daylight and 40 minutes in the dark, junior runners and grandmasters (60 years old and above).

“We were flooded by social runners. These are runners that run for the fun of it and bring a vibe and remind us that running is meant to be enjoyed and is not all about PBs [personal bests],” said Mhlahlo.

“The event was a success, seeing that it was the first night race since Covid. It clearly highlighted the resilience of the running community and that they are getting back to the runners’ social life and refuse to be stopped by rain or load-shedding. A huge thanks to all our partners, sponsors, and everyone that rolled up their sleeves to make the vision of the event and even bigger success.”

He urged the community to look out for the following races.

  • The Easter 100, an unofficial three-day club run event held over the Easter weekend. The event is great for Comrades training. It will be take place between 7 and 9 April, and it comprises three runs of 48, 32 and 20km.
  • The Randburg Harriers Challenge (21.1/10/5km) on 30 July, which forms part of the Joburg Vitality Run Series.
  • The Time Trial Grand Prix Challenge later in the year (scheduled for springtime), so keep your eye on our socials for date and times.
