Elegant and classy, every service you can traditionally enjoy in top restaurants was there.

Teacher Tandi Theron said the school offers hospitality studies as a choice subject in the senior phase. “According to the curriculum, the learners are required to do a practical assessment task once a term that involves food preparation and food service.”

The purpose of the event was for assessment. Learners were assessed as chefs, food servers, waiters, or barmen. That count towards their marks for the end of the term on their reports as practical components.

“In terms of performances, the learners are taught skills during the year or in a run-up to the assessment task. In each role they are assigned to, we look out for skills they have been taught. Each learner has to do a written preparation part for the work they are responsible for and that forms a basis of their own personal preparation for the evening and it is marked and counted as part of the practical mark,” said Theron.

Learner and main chef of the day Amira Encarnacao said that the preparations were nerve-wracking and stressful but lots of fun. “We have been preparing for a week because we have to do written preparation as well. I had a really great team; we worked well together and I hope we will get good marks.”

Theron added that the food was well received, and the dishes were extremely tasty and beautifully presented. “The learners were self-disciplined, they ensured that everybody pull their part because hospitality is a team subject and everybody worked together – even the food service learners were able to successfully carry off very good service.”
