Lonehill residents embrace free park run events
Residents of Lonehill are enjoying participating in park runs.
Parkruns are a global initiative that organizes free weekly timed 5-kilometre runs in local parks and open spaces. The aim of these parkruns is to encourage people to lead healthier and more active lifestyles by providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for people of all ages and abilities to walk, jog, run, volunteer, or spectate.
Residents of Lonehill perceive participating in parkruns as a great way to stay active, meet new people and enjoy the great outdoors. Whether you are a seasoned runner or just starting out, parkruns are a fun and accessible way to improve your fitness and wellbeing.
And because it’s free to participate, it’s a fantastic way to stay active without incurring costs. According to the councillor of ward 94, David Foley, good relationships have been formed by the regulars every week and new attendees are welcomed to each event. Volunteers are needed at each parkrun as they assist in the day’s activities, out of their own free will.
“I really enjoy engaging with my ward residents during the park runs where many questions are asked about varied topics from service delivery to what is happening in council on a regular basis”, said Foley.
Foley further stated that “Parkrun ensures you get out into the fresh air and start your journey to a healthy lifestyle every week come rain or shine. I highly recommend it to everyone. Within my ward, there are two parkrun venues, Lonehill Park off Calderwood Road Lonehill, and Gracepoint Church off Duncan Road in Glenferness.” There are milestones of 50, 100, 250 and 500 runs completed park runs where you can purchase a t-shirt to show you have completed these milestones.
One resident Rui de Pina said “Parkruns are fantastic. We get a chance to meet new people and it encourages us to work on our health and engage with many things that bother us in the area.”
