Velocity FA fell short in six goal thriller

In an RCLFA game played at Ferndale High School, youngsters displayed beautiful football and scored a lot of goals.

Velocity Football Academy U17 were defeated at home by Starlets School of Excellence in a six-goal thriller in a Rand Central League Football Association (RCFA) match.

Velocity FA, who had recently relocated to Ferndale High School as their home field for the season, was unable to control the high-flying Starlets attackers.

The visitors applied more pressure to the host team but were unable to break down their defence. Both teams produced few chances in the first half. Scarlets forward Suprice Sebuye scored first, putting his team up 1-0 two minutes before halftime.

Aidan de Smidt, the home team’s coach, made two substitutions in the second half to try to catch up. The visitors did not allow the home team time to regroup as Sebuye scored his second goal of the day (2-0).

Velocity FA, the better-looking side, began to offer signs of hope in the second half as they gained more positions and produced more opportunities.

Smidt said that the second half was much better, and they played the football they normally play. “We had to make a few subs to bring the energy level up and make an impact which we did. Half-time talk was about reminding them of the plays we do and honestly switching them on. I have been through a lot with this team, and I know their potential and they seem to come alive in the second half.

Banele Africa’s long-range strike to make it 2-1 was a morale booster for the home squad. However, the home team lacked concentration, and the substitution Mohapi Molapane penalized them, allowing the away team to gain a 3-1 advantage.

The home team increased their pressure, and Sihle Mavundla scored (3-2) to keep his team in the game. With his hat trick, Sebuye ended the home team’s aspirations and secured all three points for the away team in a 4-2 win.

Smidt said that the game was good, and they know Starlets well and it’s always a tassel with them. “We had to be on our A game which we weren’t unfortunately, making a few silly mistakes and allowing silly goals in which we lacked concentration. Although we came with some kind of comeback, but it wasn’t enough.”

He added that they will analyse and fix their mistakes in training. “We go back to the drawing board and keep moving forward. It’s a long season ahead with a few tournaments coming up as the Engen cup and international tours but we still need to focus on winning more games in the league and see where we end up.”
