Blairgowrie coach Elvis Dickson wins basketball championship
Coach Elvis has seeded the seeds of future success at his local club, Old Parks Sports Club, through workshops, training camps, and mentorship programmes, inspiring the next generation to dream big and achieve their dreams.
Blairgowrie resident Elvis Dickson has risen from humble beginnings to guide a professional basketball team to the pinnacle of success – a national championship.
Dickson is the coach of Basketball National League champions, Cape Town Tigers Basketball Club. With this victory, he will represent South Africa in the Basketball Africa League qualifiers in October where the Tigers will compete against top clubs from across the continent.
He said winning the national championship filled him with immense pride and satisfaction. “It’s a testament to the collective efforts of our organisation, from the players on the court to the front office staff behind the scenes. This victory is a testament to excellence, and validates our strategic planning, talent acquisition, coaching philosophy and commitment to fostering a winning culture,” added Dickson.
His journey into coaching and management began with a deep passion for the game and a desire to contribute positively to player development. He started as an assistant coach, learning and growing under experienced mentors, and gradually worked his way up.
His coaching prowess spread quickly, and it didn’t take long for his talent to attract the attention of professional basketball organisations. Soon, he found himself at the helm of a professional team, Tigers, a remarkable leap from his local coaching roots.

“The opportunity to lead this team came from a combination of building a strong coaching and managerial resume, first as a coach and director of basketball at St David’s Marist Inanda, and also as general manager of Soweto Panthers Basketball Club, establishing a reputation for player development and demonstrating a strategic approach to the game.”
He added this achievement marked a significant milestone in his career.
“It not only solidifies my credibility as a successful leader but also underscores my ability to assemble a winning team and make crucial organisational decisions. It amplifies my reputation as a capable leader and opens doors to new opportunities within the basketball world, potentially influencing my trajectory toward higher-profile roles in management.”
Dickson’s journey serves as a source of inspiration for young coaches and players alike. It underscores the importance of embracing challenges, learning from setbacks, and constantly pushing boundaries.
“I hope my story encourages them to dream big, work relentlessly, and believe in their ability to overcome obstacles on the path to success.
“This championship is a stepping stone toward even greater achievements and I’m excited to navigate the evolving challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
