Running a market can be difficult and even an adult does not always get it right. But when Grade 7 learners at Tutor the Future ran dozens of stalls for their EMS project, their event went off without a hitch.

Meals, snacks, toys and all sorts of products were available to buy while other stalls looked at entertainment in the form of carnival games, to interest community members who attended. The market was held at the school in Randpark Ridge on a warm and sunny September 16.

“We did it so they can appreciate the hard work that goes into starting and running a business,” said EMS teacher Caitlin Piketh. “They will also get a sense of achievement in turning over an income, and knowing they are making a difference.”

This is because all the proceeds from the day will be given to Just in Time Baby Sanctuary, a home for abandoned and neglected babies in Roodepoort. A raffle was also held as a fundraiser.

Families and friends did help the youngsters with their stalls, but in most cases, this was only to a small degree. Learners oversaw the marketing, posters, gazebos, displays, prices and menus, and everything else to do with the stalls.

School owner Nicole Stewart congratulated the learners on a well-organised market and thanked everyone who showed support.
