A R1 000 fine could be issued to parties per late poster
The DA, EFF and ANC could face fines if their election posters are not removed soon now the deadline has passed.
All three major political parties contesting the Ward 102 by-election left their election posters on the streets past the deadline for removal, but some left their posters out longer than others. Metro Police say these will be removed with a R1 000 fine per poster.

According to Section 28 of the City’s Outdoor Advertising By-laws (2009), parties had 14 days to remove the posters. The election (won by the DA’s Lucinda Harman by 94,67% of the total votes cast) was held on August 23, meaning the deadline was September 7.

By September 12, The ANC and EFF still had posters out on some of the major streets in the ward, including Bram Fischer Drive and Conrad Drive. A number of their posters were also found around the Randburg CBD and Randburg Taxi Rank. The DA appeared to have removed all of its posters except one or two, though this was also done a few days after the deadline.

“The council may decide to take down the posters on its own, for a set cost paid by the appropriate party for each poster,” said Metro Police spokesperson, Xolani Fihla. “Every poster that the City removes after the grace period will be added up for each party, and an appropriate fine of R1000 per poster will be given.”

Harman and ANC candidate, Mboshwa Zephaniah Thwala said their parties’ remaining posters would be removed shortly. EFF candidate Bernadictor Mini was not immediately available for comment.
