Blairgowrie property catches fire

The fire was put out successfully and no fatalities or injuries were reported.

Emergency services responded to a fire at an abandoned property on the corner of Loots and Republic roads in Blairgowrie on March 12.

Medics on the scene confirmed that there were no fatalities or injuries as the fire was in the yard and is said to have been caused by a fire starting in stacked tyres.

Battalion Chief Rudi Swanepoel from Fire Ops was first on the scene and confirmed that the source of the fire was the tyres but could not say what started it. “Parts of the roof caught on fire as well.”

Precious Mphuthi who has lived at the property for three years, said there are about 100 occupants who live on the property.

“The government needs to intervene in our living conditions. I pay rent to the house owner, a foreign national, and he allows anyone to live here,” she claimed.

“I couldn’t go to work today and I have children to feed.”

The fire has been put out successfully.
