Isaac Mangena, the City Power spokesperson, explained that the businesses targeted owed the entity about R6m, collectively.

“That is the money we are going after today. We are looking at recovering most of the debt owed to the Randburg Service Delivery Centre. The centre is owed about R600m across Randburg. Kya Sand is an industrial area where most of the large power users are based. They owe City Power about R40 m.

“These are the same businesses that have been complaining about the power supply in the area while not paying for some of the services. We will be engaging with the businesses to ensure that the level of payment increases and they do what is right.”

On the target list, a total of eight defaulting businesses were disconnected from the network and furnished with disconnection cards. These customers owe City Power more than R2 m of revenue combined.

He added that Kya Sand has in the past few months been plagued with constant power outages as a result of theft and vandalism to electricity infrastructure. These outages prompted customer outrage with some threatening to boycott paying rates.

In an effort to minimise these constant outages in the area, City Power is investing in a hybrid network project (a combination of overhead lines and underground cables) and this is currently underway.
