Spark Randpark Ridge’s young learners participated in a gardening activity to commemorate Earth Day.

Learners participated in planting fruits and vegetables as part of the event. This initiative aims to connect students with nature and emphasise the importance of environmental stewardship.

The school emphasises holistic education, focusing on academics and instilling the values of social responsibility. Learners were taught about their impact on the planet and how simple actions can contribute to environmental sustainability.

Families supported the initiative by donating compost, seeds, trees, and old tires for use in the garden, fostering a sense of community involvement and shared responsibility for the environment.

Karen Trinity Bull the school’s principal explained that they eventually want to have their own vegetable garden that learners and staff can have access to.

“We wanted to do this initiative because we feel like children these days are on devices and indoors a lot and they do not play outside and get fresh air like they supposed to. This exposes them to fresh air, working with nature and enjoying the outdoors.”

The learners worked together and were able to plant veggies like spinach, mint leaves, carrots and tomatoes. There were also general plants that they planted and learned about.

The principal added that they will build on this garden as their starting point and as they go along they will create a bigger garden with a variety of plants and produce.
