Young golfer wins Century 21 Randburg challenge
Diego DaGama said that he is inspired by his dad who is involved with professional golf and he learned golf from watching it on TV.
Diego DeGama (12) bagged R2000 after winning the Century 21 Randburg Putt Putt Challenge held at Randpark Ridge Golf Club.
Century 21 Randburg’s marketing specialist Zunaid Abrahams explained that in the challenge the person who got the lowest score won the big prize.
“The ruling was anywhere out of the green you start again but it counts as one swing. Hole five was particularly difficult as there was a grass spot covering 90% of the green with a hill. At Randpark Gold the Putt Putt has no borders or stops so your ball is only guided by your swing.”
Diego DeGama got a par 25 out of a par 27. There were many players but most of them got very frustrated at the hole.
DeGama explained that he felt very happy about his performance and one of the key moments was when he made a very difficult putt that decided whether he was going to win or lose.
“I did exactly what I wanted to and executed it perfectly. Some talented players was playing very well and pushed me more.”
The young golfer pulled off a great performance despite hurting his finger the day before and struggled to hold the club properly.
“It feels really good to be champion because it really gave me some confidence in my game. I’ve had a few practice rounds on the greens with my friends before the event and that helped.”
He added that there are areas or skills he will work on going to the next games.
“My long irons and my putting are the keys for me to play well. I’m working on my golf game and balancing every part of my game out. On school days I would practise or if I could maybe fit in nine holes after school but on weekends I try to play as much as I possibly can. I see myself as a professional golfer in college on the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) tour.”
