Conn O'Donoghue, vice-chairman of Old Parks Bowls Club, said that they are waiting to see if they are hosting Men's Gauteng Open competitions, and they have a good chance due to their nationals' successes

Old Parks Sports Club successfully hosted the Bowls South Africa Men’s National Championships 2024 at their greens.

Bowlers from around the country gathered at Old Parks to participate in the prestigious tournament. The club held the National Men’s Open Pairs, National Men Open Singles and Vets Singles and Vets and Open Men’s Singles play-offs.

Conn O’Donoghue, vice-chairman of Old Parks Bowls Club, explained that it was a very prestigious event for the club and that

not all venues qualify to host nationals.

“It was a great success for the club. Members volunteered their time generously to ensure everything ran smoothly. Worked hand-in-hand with the main club to ensure everything was in place. These events bring national members and their guests to Old Parks which ensures growth and recognition in the bowls community and showcases our club in the best light.”

The club had to take responsibility and make sure that their greens were up to a certain standard and that the technical officials and umpires were incorporated.

“Our surroundings were well kept. Food and beverages had to be planned. Our members had to give up their time and use of greens. We needed to align with the main club and other events (sports) being hosted. Timing of games, food, beverages, staff, green preparation building up to the event and each day, each morning, oversight of everything during the day to make it a success and hopefully to more events like this in the future.”

O’Donoghue added that clubs are struggling at the moment, so it is very important to showcase themselves in the best possible way.
