MomConnect celebrates 10 years of health impact
MomConnect, South Africa's pioneering maternal health programme, celebrates 10 years of supporting mothers with free, life-saving health information via mobile technology, reaching nearly 5 million users.
The National Department of Health proudly celebrates the 10th anniversary of MomConnect, a pioneering maternal health programme that has reached nearly 5 million registered mothers across South Africa. This milestone reflects a decade of progress in maternal and child health, achieved through collaboration with healthcare professionals, partner organisations, and the mothers who have benefited from the programme.

Launched in 2014, MomConnect provides free health information to pregnant women and new mothers. The service, available in all 11 official South African languages, delivers SMS messages with health tips and advice. WhatsApp support is also offered in English, making it easier for mothers to access important health information during pregnancy and the early years of their child’s life.
Participation is voluntary, and mothers can sign up at clinics across the country. This has ensured that women from all backgrounds have access to critical health resources, helping to reduce maternal mortality and improve child health.
One of the most significant advancements for MomConnect was the introduction of WhatsApp and a helpdesk service. This innovation has allowed mothers to engage in two-way conversations with healthcare professionals, receiving personalised support and advice. In 2023, the programme further integrated responsible AI technology to enhance its reach and efficiency.
Gauteng MEC for Health Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko expressed her pride in the programme, stating, “MomConnect has connected millions of mothers to essential health information and services. We are committed to reaching even more mothers, ensuring that every woman has the support she needs for a healthy pregnancy and early motherhood.”
The programme’s impact is clear. MomConnect currently serves 288 051 monthly active users and handles about 40 000 helpdesk messages each month, giving mothers access to timely information and support. The programme has also achieved high rates of antenatal care attendance and vaccination coverage. A recent study found that 96% of mothers attended at least four antenatal visits, and 89% of mothers reported their babies received all six recommended vaccinations at six weeks.

In addition to improving maternal health, MomConnect has increased breastfeeding rates and provided valuable guidance on family planning, contributing to better outcomes for both mothers and babies.
Debbie Rogers, CEO of Reach Digital Health, highlighted the future potential of the programme: “With AI integration, we can further scale MomConnect and provide mothers with the best possible health information right at their fingertips.”
Looking ahead, the 10th anniversary of MomConnect marks a commitment to expanding the platform and reaching even more mothers. As South Africa works towards its National Development Plan goals, MomConnect continues to play a vital role in improving maternal and child health.
