Klein Jukskei River pollution is concerning

The Klein Jukskei River pollution crisis is alarming residents, who demand urgent intervention as sewage, foam, and chemical smells persist, threatening health and the environment.

Persistent pollution in the Klein Jukskei River is sparking outrage among residents, who are calling on authorities to address what they describe as a severe health and environmental hazard.
Despite months of complaints, residents said there had been little action to prevent worsening pollution in the river, which flows through several Johannesburg neighbourhoods.

Since February this year, resident Jean Rymer has consistently reported the problem to Johannesburg Water and various environmental bodies. Her recent emails, shared with several government and media contacts, highlight an increasingly dire situation.
“There is thick foam on the river, and the smell is horrendous,” she stated in her most recent message. “It’s not just sewage; there are chemical smells too.” She emphasised that the pollution was not only destroying local ecosystems but also posed a serious health risk to those who rely on the river for daily needs.

Rymer’s frustration echoes the experience of her neighbour, Adriaan Rossouw, who has been reporting similar issues since early 2022. Rossouw initially noted a temporary improvement in February after repairs were made to a collapsed sewer pipe. However, recent observations indicate that the pollution has returned and worsened, with thick layers of foam and a strong sewage smell spreading along the river.
Both residents worry about the impact of this pollution on the local community and environment. The river supports various wildlife, and local squatters often use it for washing, cooking, and even drinking. “Are you waiting for people to start dying before doing something about this?” Rymer questioned, pointing out the urgent need for intervention to prevent potential health crises such as cholera or other waterborne diseases.

In response to Rymer’s complaints, Johannesburg Water briefly acknowledged her concerns in May, stating that a local depot would investigate. However, residents said they have seen little concrete action since then. Rymer has sent multiple follow-up emails and included other environmental and municipal agencies, urging them to intervene before the situation worsens further. As weeks have passed with no visible improvements, she has escalated the matter to media outlets, hoping to raise awareness and prompt faster action.

Rymer also pointed out that the pollution in the Klein Jukskei River was not an isolated issue. The river flows into the already-polluted Jukskei River, compounding water quality concerns for downstream communities, including the densely populated area of Alexandra. As pollution in one area impacts many others, residents are emphasising that this is a shared problem requiring coordinated solutions.

Environmental experts stress that water pollution on this scale poses long-term risks to local biodiversity, and without immediate action, the damage to local ecosystems may be irreversible. The pollution not only contaminates water sources but also affects soil quality and the overall health of the environment.

Rymer and other residents are urging government bodies, including Johannesburg Water and the Department of Water and Sanitation, to step up efforts to resolve the problem. They hope their ongoing complaints and the involvement of the media will lead to better enforcement of pollution control measures, thorough investigations, and sustainable solutions for the Klein Jukskei.

Despite assurances from some municipal representatives, residents feel frustrated by the lack of visible progress. The situation, they said, demanded an urgent, comprehensive approach to restore the health of the river and safeguard the well-being of communities and the environment alike.

The pollution of the Klein Jukskei River serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for effective water management and environmental protection. Residents remain hopeful that their voices will bring attention to the problem, urging authorities to act swiftly to prevent further harm to the environment and public health
