The VGRA Domestic Workers Forum celebrates a new era in leadership

Carol Corbett’s departure marks the end of an era for the VGRA Domestic Workers Forum, but her successor, Jan Kennedy, promises a seamless transition.

The VGRA Domestic Workers Forum recently bid a heartfelt farewell to its longstanding leader, Carol Corbett, at its final meeting for 2024. After 14 years of unwavering commitment to the community, Corbett is stepping down from her role, leaving behind an incredible legacy of service, compassion, and unity.

Corbett’s leadership brought a unique sense of belonging and spirituality to the forum, creating a trusted space where members could connect, grow, and access vital support. Under her guidance, the forum thrived as a social and practical network, offering everything from safety advice by SAPS and Beagle Watch to free health screenings, pet behaviour tips, and even trips to places like the Johannesburg Zoo. Her departure was deeply sorrowful as members expressed their gratitude for her dedication over the years.

Though stepping back, Corbett hasn’t left entirely. She has generously offered to assist Jan Kennedy, her long-time deputy, who will now lead the forum. Kennedy brings over 14 years of experience to her new role, having worked closely with Corbett to organise events and services for the forum. Her commitment to the community extends beyond the forum, with initiatives like donating VGRA-knitted blankets to the SAPS Randburg Trauma Centre and Forest Farm Centre for Cerebral Palsied Adults.

The forum, established in the early 2000s, has consistently supported and empowered domestic workers in the area, only pausing during COVID restrictions. With over 100 registered members, 25 to 30 regularly attend the monthly gatherings, despite some challenges with employers or part-time work schedules.

Looking ahead, Kennedy’s leadership aims to build on the strong foundation Corbett has laid. The forum plans to continue its valuable partnerships, offering resources on health, safety, and financial guidance while expanding its reach to neighbouring suburbs to include more domestic workers.

The recent meeting marked not only a fond farewell to Corbett but also a warm welcome to Kennedy. Members honoured Corbett with a touching hymn, celebrating her years of service, while expressing confidence in Kennedy’s ability to lead the forum into its next chapter.
