Water wastage as Helen Road water leak left unresolved for several months
A long-standing water leak in Mostyn Park continues to flow, despite being reported to Johannesburg Water, raising concerns about service delivery and water conservation.

A water leak on Helen Road in Mostyn Park has been flowing continuously since November last year, with no intervention from Johannesburg Water (JW), despite it being reported.

Hlayisani Maluleke, the resident who alerted the Randburg Sun to the issue, described the leak as a steady flow of clean water. While it has not caused any damage to properties, or disrupted the water supply, residents are frustrated by the lack of response from authorities.

“I reported the issue to JW, but no one has come to inspect or fix it,” Maluleke said.
Despite many infrastructure concerns across Johannesburg, residents expect quicker responses to prevent water wastage. In a city where water conservation is increasingly important, leaks left unattended for extended periods raise serious concerns.

While no businesses have been affected, the leak highlights broader issues within municipal services, including slow turnaround times for reported problems. Maluleke confirmed that this is the first time they have experienced such an issue in the area, but the lack of action from JW has left them disappointed.
According to JW’s official channels, water leaks can be reported via their customer service line, email, or social media platforms. However, the response time for repairs remains a major concern for residents in various suburbs. Residents who encounter similar issues are encouraged to report them through the multiple channels, and follow up persistently to ensure action is taken.
With Johannesburg’s ageing infrastructure and ongoing service delivery challenges, unattended leaks contribute to unnecessary water losses.

The Randburg Sun reached out to JW regarding this particular matter, but they were unable to respond by time of print. However, their response will be published once made available.
