WATCH: Fire guts Cosmo City flat

No injuries were reported when a large fire erupted at a Cosmo City home, but the house was left with serious damage.

A large fire broke out in a flat in Cosmo City Extension 20, causing severe damage on Thursday morning, April 10.

While no injuries have been reported, the flat was heavily damaged as firefighters continued to battle the flames.

Community leader Sibongile Mnikathi told Randburg Sun that the cause of the fire is still unclear, but it is suspected to be linked to an electrical fault.

“We had no power for two days. Just 20 to 30 minutes after it came back, people started seeing smoke, and then suddenly, there was a huge fire,” said Mnikathi.

Emergency services were quickly called to the scene. Firefighters are still working to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to nearby homes.

The City of Johannesburg Emergency Services media liaison, Officer Xolile Khumalo, confirmed that EMS Firefighters are currently responding to the fire incident
“A 16-roomed flat caught fire sometime after 08:00, where eight rooms were completely gutted and the other 8 suffered smoke damage. There are no casualties at this moment,” Khumalo added.
