Msawawa fire victims receives much needed help

Douglasdale community donated clothes and food to the Msawawa residents that were affected by fire.

After the heartfelt appeal for donations to the community the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF), alongside Douglasdale SAPS members distributed the donations to Msawawa Informal Settlement residents who lost their belongings in a recent devastating fire.

Freda Boiles of the CPF said that they would like to express their deepest gratitude to the community for their overwhelming response to their request for assistance.

Msawawa residents received much needed help.

“Your kindness and compassion have truly touched our hearts and demonstrated the strength of our unity. Witnessing our community come together in times of need is truly inspiring and heartwarming. Your generosity has made a significant difference in the lives of those affected by this unfortunate event.

Fire burns down 20 dwellers in Msawawa Informal Settlement.

Lizzy Mabena, chairperson of the CPF explained that the damage caused by the fire was devastating as a total of 20 dwellings were affected.
“The effect was beyond the 20 dwelling as all the surrounding people were in panic and others were trying to dose out the fire and others were already moving out their belongings in fear.”

Mabhena confirmed that they donated items like second hand clothing, blankets, and food parcels.

“The food package was to try and keep the family going for a month. We had things like rice, maze meal, and tinned food. We also gave toiletries that includes sanitary pads for women.”

She added that on the day of the fire the community reached out as it was progressing trying to get assistant and the fire truck.

“The community themselves were also trying to put out the fire using buckets of water but unfortunately that was not enough to control the fire. The shacks are close to each other and the fire spreads quickly. That also spark a need for us to offer some sort of relieve as we were involved and exposed to the devastation that the community had suffered.”
