While driving through the suburb, the officers noticed a parked vehicle with its headlights off and the front passenger door wide open. Upon closer inspection, they saw a man crawling out of a manhole and jumping into the vehicle. Realising something was wrong, the officers made a U-turn to get a better view of the situation.

As they circled back, they saw two suspects running away from the scene, while three more climbed out of the same manhole and jumped into the vehicle. The car quickly drove off, but the officers followed in pursuit.
The chase ended when the officers managed to block the vehicle at the corner of Dalmney Road and Gavin Avenue in Blairgowrie. Five suspects were successfully apprehended and handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation.

Cable theft remains a serious issue in many Johannesburg suburbs, affecting power supply, traffic systems, and community safety. Incidents like these can leave residents without electricity, or phone lines, for extended periods, and the cost of repairs puts a heavy burden on municipalities.

Blairgowrie residents have raised concerns about the frequency of such crimes and the risks they pose, not just to infrastructure but also to personal safety. The quick response and alertness of the officers involved played a key role in preventing further damage.

The arrests bring some relief to the community, but also serve as a reminder of the need for strong co-operation between private security, law enforcement, and residents. SAPS has not yet confirmed whether the suspects are linked to other cable theft cases in the area.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity and to stay informed through official channels. Community involvement remains one of the most effective tools in the fight against crime.
