Strydom Park Ratepayers Association get permission to fence greenbelt

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo has granted the Strydom Park Ratepayers Association permission to fence the greenbelt area on the Fabriek Street side.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) have given permission to the Strydom Park Ratepayers Association (SPRA) to erect a perimeter fence around the greenbelt area on the Fabriek Street side, at no cost to the entity nor the city.

The fence installation project will be carried out in two phases. In the initial phase, the fence will extend from Graphite Industrial Park to Kruger Road, beyond the bridge. In the second phase, the fence will be installed on the Gerhardus Road side of the greenbelt. The installation aims to enhance the greenbelt’s aesthetics and, most importantly, the safety and security of the residents of Strydom Park.

Karolynn van Vuren, chairperson of the association, applauded JCPZ for finally granting them permission. She explained that it wasn’t a fight to get it, since the entity is quite open to shared partnership in managing areas. “It’s getting to the right people and getting the authority letter that takes time. We believe that it is going to go a long way in managing the dumping in this area, and minimising the water pollution that comes directly from the people who sort through their waste irresponsibly. It will, hopefully, also deter much of the petty and opportunistic crime that comes directly from the greenbelt.”

This is a joint partnership, with JCPZ continuing to maintain and mow the greenbelt. The association will make contributions to keep the park tidy, making it a safe and clean area for people to access. “We have had a lot of rain this summer, so, keeping the vegetation managed has been a challenge. We are hoping, however, to get at least one side of this park fenced off during the early part of the winter.”

Van Vuren further stated that they already have some fencing quotes, and are aiming to start as soon as they’ve had their annual general meeting (AGM). “We have fewer and fewer safe places to take time out. We believe the fenced park will give residents a dog friendly space. A space where employees can enjoy a little time out from the office. Wouldn’t it be lovely to have approved, safe, hygienic food vendors in the area also?”

The entity has also offered the opportunity to fence around the greenbelt area on the northern bank of the stream, along CR Swart Drive bridge. Business owners and residents have been facing numerous challenges at the bridge, which include waste dumping, crime, and displaced persons and waste collectors, who have invaded the greenbelt, building shacks. The area has also seen a significant increase in litter and waste at the riverbanks, along with illegal activities.

According to JPCZ, illegally dwelling people in the affected greenbelt must be removed, with the assistance and supervision of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the SAPS, and other relevant authorities.
