Residents warned against buying fake electricity units
Following viral social media posts, City Power is taking action against individuals selling fake electricity units and warns customers of legal and service-related consequences.
City Power has issued a strong warning to the public after several social media posts showed people selling electricity units at discounted prices. These sales are illegal and part of a scam that harms both the city and its customers.

In the videos and posts doing the rounds online, individuals appear to be offering cheaper electricity units to the public. City Power has made it clear that this is a criminal act. The utility says this scam steals from their system and puts the entire power supply at risk.
“We strongly condemn both the sale and purchase of illicit electricity units. These transactions are not only illegal; they can lead to power cuts and legal action,” said City Power’s general manager of public relations and communications Isaac Mangena.

He urged residents to only buy electricity from authorised and official vendors. Buying from anyone else goes against City Power’s rules and could lead to a disconnection or even arrest.
City Power’s security risk management team, working closely with the police, is currently looking for the person identified in the social media videos. The utility is also stepping up efforts to catch others involved in similar fraud.
“We will increase meter audits across our supply areas to find illegal activity,” said Mangena. “Where needed, we will disconnect electricity and involve the police.”
City Power is asking the public to avoid deals that seem too good to be true, and to report any suspicious activity by calling 0800 002 587.
By working together, City Power believes the community can help protect the electricity system and make sure everyone gets a fair and reliable supply.
