Blairgowrie Day celebrates heroes and community spirit
Blairgowrie residents gathered for a joyful celebration honouring police, firefighters, reclaimers, and more during the suburb’s first Blairgowrie Day.
Blairgowrie Primary School came alive as residents gathered for the suburb’s first-ever Blairgowrie Day, a celebration of unity, local pride, and the everyday heroes who keep the community going.
Under the theme: Building Blairgowrie. Building South Africa, the event paid special tribute to ward councillors, community leaders, and, most importantly, the often-uncelebrated police and fire services. These public servants were honoured during a VIP high tea, recognising their daily efforts to keep the suburb safe and thriving.

The day offered something for everyone, from fun children’s activities, to cultural experiences and lifestyle stalls. The Bee-Keepers Association delighted guests with honey tastings and beekeeping tips, historian Gareth Sephton led time-travelling dress-up journeys into the past, which proved popular with both children and adults, young ones enjoyed face-painting, arts and crafts, Voortrekker-themed adventures, and a jumping castle, while local vendors showcased handmade crafts, clothing, skincare products, and more.
There was also a wide range of food stalls, catering to all dietary preferences, including halaal, vegetarian, sweet, and savory options, and refreshments, included boba teas, cold-pressed juices, and artisan coffee, kept guests energised throughout the event.
Several organisations took part in providing educational and action-packed moments:
• Beagle Watch hosted a pet chipping clinic, promoting animal safety,
• NetCare 911 staged a thrilling emergency response demo,
• FireOps SA captured attention with a live firefighting showcase, and
• The African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO) presented stunning waste-to-art displays, while sharing powerful messages about sustainability and dignity through reclaiming.

While the event was filled with fun, it also carried a deeper message. Organisers described it as a call for communities across the country to reflect, reconnect, and rebuild together.
“I come from a family that is very community orientated and, in relation to living in Blairgowrie, I have experienced community spirit that I wanted to enhance, be a part of, and boost,” said Margaret Schwanzer, the event organiser. “We started off the event by showcasing the companies that are responsible for our safety.”
Blairgowrie Day was a grassroots initiative that set a powerful example of what is possible when neighbours come together with purpose and heart.
With plans to host the event annually, Blairgowrie Day aims to grow into a lasting tradition that continues to highlight the people, services, and stories that make the suburb special.
As the event’s motto said: “Let us experience your fabulosity, so that you may celebrate your exceptionality.”
If the first celebration was anything to go by, Blairgowrie Day is set to become a true symbol of unity, gratitude, and community pride.
