The IIE-Vega Johannesburg campus brings colour and care to Sandton SPCA

The Sandton SPCA has grown from a small group of animal welfare advocates into a comprehensive organisation that rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes animals in need. This time they were in need, and the IIE-Vega Johannesburg campus answered the call to revitalise their Book and Charity Shop.

In honour of Mandela Day and Mandela month, some staff and students from the IIE-Vega Johannesburg campus, based in Randburg, used their creativity to brighten the Sandton SPCA’s Book and Charity Shop.

Over two days, the team prepared and painted the building’s exterior, bringing it to life with a fresh coat of paint and a colourful mural. They will return later this month to complete the final touches with stencil animal artwork.

Wellness Navigator at IIE-Vega Johannesburg Shaina Matthew said: “The staff and learners thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and even spent time with the animals during breaks. Many of our team members were inspired to sign up as regular Saturday volunteers to walk the dogs. We’re grateful for the time spent at the SPCA and the difference we could make.”

The Sandton SPCA is committed to preventing cruelty to animals and promoting their welfare. Its mission is to provide a safe haven for animals, educate the public, and advocate for the humane treatment of all living beings.

The partnership with IIE-Vega Johannesburg has been meaningful to the Sandton SPCA team, as retail manager Kirsten Rolston shared. “We put out a call for an organisation to assist us with brightening up the front of our Book and Charity Shop as a Mandela Day project, and the IIE-Vega Johannesburg campus answered the call with great enthusiasm.

“We were thrilled with the design they came up with and were delighted to welcome their students and faculty to our premises in July. Phases 1 and 2 of the project have been completed, and we are so looking forward to completing the painting and unveiling the final design to our customers, staff, volunteers, and supporters later in August.”

Both organisations ensured they honored Mandela month, celebrating it in a way Nelson Mandela would have wanted. As he once noted: “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
