Ferndale Shotokan Karate Dojo wins big at Women’s Cup championships

Ferndale Shotokan Karate Dojo dominated the Pan African Shotokan Karate-Do Federation’s National Women's Cup Championship taking home 13 medals.

Ferndale based Shotokan Karate Dojo bagged 13 medals at the Pan African Shotokan Karate-Do Federation’s (PSFK) National Women’s Cup Championship, held at Kwa-Thema.

Under the guidance and training of Sensei Alex Sylvain Luenga, the students participated in kata (technique) and kumite (fighting), raking in the medals for the dojo, including four gold, five silver, and four bronze.

Luenga explained that the medals are a sign of hard work and commitment from the children. “The dojo mainly trains children, from the age of four, and young adults from the surrounding areas of Randburg, like Ferndale, Linden, and Windsor. We teach them skills of discipline, which ensures us they are able to defend themselves at all times.”

Danie Myeza, who bagged a gold medal in kumite and silver for kata, said she was truly honoured by her achievements.
“We are proud of our students who participated at the championships, bringing home medals and representing the Ferndale dojo with pride. The journey is still long, but we believe in our students’ potential,” said Luenga.

The dojo currently has two days of training on Saturday and Sunday. As it serves low-income students and is community-based, the focus is on instilling discipline and developing their self-confidence.

The students who won medals:
• David Kumbi – silver medal in kumite and bronze for kata,
• Godwill Kumbi – gold medal in kumite and silver for kata,
• Aiden Munongwa – gold medal in kumite and silver for kata,
• Wesley Luenga – silver medal for kata,
• Daniela Myeza – gold medal in kumite and silver for kata,
• Chika Ohume – bronze medal for kata,
• Tinotenda Mutaro – gold medal for kata and bronze medal in kumite, and
• Innocent Ndlovu – bronze medal for kata.
