Shincheonji Volunteers are heroes in the eyes of the communities they serve
Shincheonji Volunteers, the outreach arm of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, say their recent award nomination reflects growing recognition for their ongoing efforts to uplift local communities.
Shincheonji Volunteers, the humanitarian arm of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, say their work is guided by one principle: Showing love through action.
With teams active in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, the group has been nominated for the South African Heroes Award (SAHA) in recognition of its growing community impact.
Spokesperson Xihluke Mabasa said the nomination came as a joyful surprise. “We were truly ecstatic and deeply grateful. We believe God made this possible.” He noted that faith remains the driving force behind their programmes.

The volunteers focus on practical support based on needs identified within communities. Their projects include stationery donations, career guidance workshops, anti-bullying campaigns, and numerous clean-up initiatives. They also contribute to the country’s blood supply by hosting a minimum of three blood drives annually.

Mabasa highlighted the Easter mural project at the Malaika orphanage as one of the team’s most memorable moments. “The children were excited to paint with us. We left feeling inspired to do even more for them. It brought us back to the heart of why we volunteer.” Their annual Christmas outreach at Sparrows Village is another ongoing effort aimed at uplifting vulnerable groups.
While financial constraints remain their biggest obstacle, Mabasa added that volunteers often dig into their own pockets to ensure projects go ahead. Communities they have assisted have responded warmly, with some even inviting the volunteers to participate in their own initiatives.
Mabasa also acknowledged the role media coverage has played in amplifying their work. He urged residents to consider lending their time and skills. “Volunteerism begins with a willing heart. Even the smallest contribution can make a meaningful difference when we work together.”
Looking forward, Shincheonji Volunteers hope to strengthen collaborations with organisations and government structures across all levels, allowing them to broaden their reach and serve more communities.
