JMPD targets rising by-law violations in Randburg central business district

A targeted enforcement campaign is underway along Bram Fischer Drive, as JMPD teams work to remove illegal traders, clear pavements, and restore safe pedestrian movement.

A focused by-law enforcement operation took place in Randburg, as the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) responded to rising complaints about illegal trading and growing congestion in the CBD.

Director Eldred Fortein, who leads JMPD’s by-law enforcement unit, visited the area on December 4, to oversee the operation personally. He said the team had received several reports from residents and businesses that parts of Randburg were becoming hotspots for by-law violations.

Fortein explained that, while regional policing teams have already been active in Randburg, he felt it was important to step in and guide the operation himself.

“We’ve received various complaints that Randburg CBD is becoming a hotspot. Regional policing has been doing by-law operations here, but I decided to come in, as the director responsible for by-laws, and conduct an operation.”

The team spent the morning along Bram Fischer Drive, where officers moved through the CBD targeting illegal traders, clearing blocked pavements, and ensuring that walkways were safe and accessible for pedestrians. One of the cases they handled involved a trader operating from a motor vehicle, and officers were in the process of locating him.

Fortein confirmed that this is the second location visited during the day’s operation, and emphasised that the enforcement work is ongoing.

“We are still busy. We just took it to a different region. We received a lot of complaints from the Randburg area, and we are busy in the CBD.”

He added that JMPD will continue acting on public concerns and will not step back from restoring order where needed.

“We are not backing down from our commitment.”

Residents and businesses are encouraged to keep reporting by-law violations, to help enforcement teams maintain safe, orderly, and accessible public spaces in Randburg.
