Armed robbery highlights vigilance needed during festive shopping

Shoppers were left shaken after armed suspects struck in broad daylight in a mall in North Riding.

An armed robbery was reported at Cash Crusaders inside Bel Air Shopping Centre in North Riding on Sunday, sending shockwaves through shoppers and staff.

According to information from SCP Security, the incident occurred at approximately 10:37. CCTV footage shows two male suspects first scouting the store before entering and confronting a buyer at the counter. One suspect allegedly produced a firearm and instructed the buyer to sit down, while the second suspect moved behind the counter and began removing cash and merchandise.

The suspects reportedly stole approximately R4 000 in cash, as well as three cell phones. During the robbery, the CCTV operator activated the panic button, triggering the store’s alarm system and smoke deployment. The sudden response appeared to disrupt the suspects, who fled the store moments later.

They were seen escaping in a Suzuki Swift parked a short distance from the mall. No injuries were reported during the incident.

South African Police Service (SAPS) members were immediately alerted and arrived on the scene to begin investigations.

Authorities are urging members of the public, who may have witnessed the incident or who have information about the suspects or the vehicle, to report it to SAPS immediately.

The incident serves as a reminder for businesses and shoppers to remain vigilant, especially during the busy festive season.

Both SAPS and the store were contacted for comment. Their responses will be published once received.
