Staff at Spark Randburg welcome parents and learners to orientation day

Spark Randburg Main hosted its Grade 8 orientation day, focusing on easing learner anxiety, strengthening parent partnerships, and setting a clear foundation for academic success.

Parents and new learners gathered at Spark Randburg Main for the school’s Grade 8 orientation day, aimed at setting clear expectations for the 2025/26 academic year.

Associate principal Mbasa Javu, known to scholars and parents as Miss Javu, said the session was designed to build a strong partnership between the school and families from the start. “Orientation day is important because we want parents to understand what is expected of them, as our most important stakeholders, and what is expected of the scholars.”

During the programme, the school outlined key focus areas, including academic expectations, school culture, and learner behaviour. Parents were also guided through the school’s code of conduct, important timelines, and key dates that will shape the year ahead.

Javu said many learners arrived feeling anxious, which is common when starting at a new school. “They don’t know anybody yet, so we make sure they attend with their parents. That helps them feel more at ease.”

She described the turnout as excellent, noting that strong parental attendance is encouraged at the school. “We always insist on having hands-on and present parents. It’s very telling, and it shows that we are likely to have a good academic year and a healthy relationship with parents.”

According to Javu, parental involvement plays a vital role in learner success. “If we don’t have a parent’s buy-in, we won’t get the scholar’s buy-in. Parents help support the school’s drive, monitor learners at home, and work with us as a team.”

She added that consistency between home and school allows everyone to work towards the same goals. “When we are all singing from the same hymn, we can guide the child along the path we want them to follow.”

The orientation marked the first step in welcoming the new Grade 8 class, and building a school community focused on co-operation, stability, and excellence.
