Ward 134 benefits from high-visibility operation

Various city entities were present to address issues such as potholes, faded road markings, streetlight faults, illegal signage, overgrown verges, and unresolved reinstatements.

The streets of Randpark Ridge were busy early on January 28 as City of Johannesburg entities conducted a high-visibility operation in Ward 134.

Ahead of the operation, a detailed walkabout was conducted on January 22 to document infrastructure defects street by street. That inspection led to a multi-departmental response involving Johannesburg Roads Agency, City Power, City Parks, Pikitup, Johannesburg Metro Police Department, Environmental Health, and Joburg Water.

Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp said that the operation was the result of sustained engagement and pressure around long-standing service delivery failures raised by residents in Ward 134.

“The focus of the operation is simple: visible, practical fixes that immediately improve safety, cleanliness, and quality of life.”

The operation included pothole repairs and road marking reinstatements. Teams also removed illegal signage, trimmed trees and grass, picked up litter, addressed streetlights burning during the day, and enforced rules for informal trading and suspected contraventions.

“As the councillor, our role is to hold the city administration accountable and ensure departments respond on the ground,” said Steenkamp.

He added that all the involved departments were given a list of the issues that residents have voiced.

“We will see what matters will be resolved and what still needs to be driven with the city. I have members of the ward committee who will assist in monitoring what issues need to be resolved and outstanding issues from the operation. We understand that they still lack resources.”
