Survivor leads Randburg’s mobile cancer screening drive

After losing her mother and surviving cancer herself, Farzana Haniff now takes life-saving screenings to communities across South Africa.

Farzana Haniff was just 11 years old when she lost her mother to cancer. Years later, she faced her own diagnosis.

Today, the Randburg resident is a cancer survivor who has turned her pain into purpose. She now leads a cancer awareness campaign that focuses on early detection and prevention. Because cancer runs in her family, Haniff underwent major surgery, including a bilateral mastectomy. Several relatives have also been affected by the disease.

“I know what cancer does to a family,” she said. “Early detection can save lives.”

Working with her husband, Shiraz, Haniff partners with healthcare providers, including Radiant Diagnostic Imaging, to take mobile screening units to workplaces and communities. The campaign offers mammograms, prostate cancer screenings, cervical cancer tests and skin cancer checks. In 2024, the team screened 19 000 people across South Africa and detected 354 early cancer cases.

The mobile units are self-powered and equipped with modern 3D mammogram technology. Screenings are conducted by qualified professionals, and results are reviewed by radiologists. Based in Main Avenue, Randburg, the campaign operates nationally and often reaches rural areas where access to healthcare is limited.

For Haniff, the mission is simple: find cancer early and give families hope.
