Six-year water leak at Kruispad Church to be fixed in March

After years of the water leak being reported, Johannesburg Water says it is bringing in a specialist contractor to fix the leak at Kruispad Church.

A water leak that has been ongoing on the grounds of Kruispad Church could finally be repaired this month, according to Johannesburg Water (JW).

The service delivery fault, located at the corner of Malibongwe and Elise roads, has been going on for about six years, resulting in repeated fault reports and follow-ups from church leader Johan Kruger.

Kruger expressed his frustration about the situation. “The incompetence, and the absolute lack of responsibility, pride and consequence management in their work, is just absolutely shocking.” He added that constant assurances from JW officials left him feeling discouraged about whether the matter would ever be concluded.

Ward 102 councillor Bea Campbell-Cloete engaged JW on the situation and said there had not been escalations made directly to her office. Campbell-Cloete further stated that after communication with JW, there is now a plan to repair the leak.

“According to Johannesburg Water, they are in the process of procuring a specialist contractor to undertake the work, and if no problems are encountered during the procurement process, the work will be completed by the end of March.”

The publication spoke to Nombuso Shabalala from Joburg water. She stated that JW acknowledged the significant delay in resolving the water leak and apologised for the inconvenience this matter has caused to the church and the surrounding community.

According to her, the Randburg Depot had previously attended to the site and initiated repair work. However, it became evident that the leak presented underlying technical complexities that could not be fully resolved through routine maintenance by the depot’s internal technical teams.

Shabalala confirmed that they have initiated a procurement process to appoint a specialist contractor who will undertake the required repairs. The entity anticipates that the work will be concluded in March, subject to the completion of procurement processes and operational planning.

She also noted that the repair will require a full water supply interruption to the church and neighbouring areas.
