Armed robber from Zandspruit receives 10 years’ imprisonment

The suspect, a foreign national without documents, received 10 years direct imprisonment.

Honeydew police are celebrating the successful conviction of a 29-year-old man from Zandspruit for armed robbery and possession of stolen property.

The lead detective on the case, Constable Dakalo Muanalo, was praised in particular by his colleagues for his work in bringing Jafta Masilela to justice.

“In December last year, we received a docket about a robbery with a weapon and there was one suspect, a male, with stolen property,” he said.

“The docket had no medical report so I had to go to Helen Joseph Hospital and get it. I also retook the statement from the victim as usually right after the incident people are in shock and do not tell the police everything. The victim was from Cosmo City so I had to go there to get the statement.”

He said the victim, a woman, was going to work and she was at the corner of Bothma Street and Deysel Road, Roodepoort, when two men accosted her.

“One had a knife and grabbed her, taking her handbag, wallet and bracelet. She screamed and community members came to assist. They grabbed the one [suspect] with the knife [and stolen items] while the other one got away.”

The case was heard in Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court. Bail was opposed and Masilela, who it was discovered was a foreign national without documents, was remanded in custody.

At trial, he admitted guilt and was given 10 years of direct imprisonment for armed robbery and possession of stolen property. He was also declared unfit to own a firearm, for life.

He never gave police information about the other suspect.
