Suspects withdraw money after borrowing a woman’s phone for a few minutes

A woman lent her phone to some people for a few minutes, only to find out later they had withdrawn her money.

Police have urged residents to beware of fraud after an incident where all of a woman’s money was withdrawn from her account after she lent people her phone for a few minutes.

Randburg Police Station spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja explained that on one afternoon in August, the woman saw some people outside her house.
“She approached them and they informed her that they are giving away free routers and free [airtime],” Maja said.

“She alleged that she had [an] interest and the suspect asked [for] her phone to dial the company to ascertain if she qualifies. She did so and she was informed to switch her phone [off] for two hours.”

Later, when the woman was at home and had turned on her phone she realised she had not been receiving messages.

After a day or two, she went to the bank and found out that her money had been withdrawn from her account.

“[On] that note we are appealing or requesting that our community should not allow anyone [to use] their phones or laptops. Do not trust any strangers with your personal information.”

Furthermore, Maja advised community members to not store important information on their phones and laptops.

They should also not buy anything advertised on social media, and should rather go to retailers or known places to purchase things.
