Temporary fix no solution for Oxford Street’s deep holes
The temporary fix of tar chips in the Oxford Street pothole has not helped the problem, with the Johannesburg Road Agency’s Region B depot saying they have scheduled repairs.
Johannesburg Road Agency’s (JRA) Region B depot has confirmed that they are aware of the deep potholes on Oxford Street in Ferndale.
Ward 104 councillor Emi Koerkomor explained that the entity has attempted to fill the holes temporarily with tar chips, which washed out within two days. “I have not heard a word from them since, even though I pointed out to them that these tar chips have now washed out.”

She added that about two and a half weeks ago, after she made a video and tagged the city manager in it, she was told that asphalt work would start that same day.

The entity confirmed that road repairs are scheduled to begin on April 28
JRA’s acting head of regional operations Mpho Maruping said the entity prioritises repairs on high-traffic roads based on safety risk, severity of damage, traffic volume, strategic importance of the route, and JRA’s service level obligations.

He added that roads to be resurfaced are identified through a visual conditions assessment and are informed by the visual conditions index, which categorises the condition of the road segment as very poor, poor, fair, good, or very good. Roads that are in very poor condition are prioritised for road resurfacing. “The roll-out of the resurfacing programme is determined by budget availability. The regional depot will submit Oxford Street for the assessment, to determine its condition. In the meantime, the road will be addressed through pothole repairs and other related maintenance work.”
