The Golden Years Social Club gives seniors a place to connect, share stories, and make memories

As the Golden Years Social Club opens its doors, it invites seniors to reconnect, pursue passions, and rediscover the joy in their lives, in a lively, welcoming space made by the community just for them.

In a heartfelt ceremony filled with joy and warmth, the Golden Years Social Club officially opened its doors in Sundowner, Randburg. Founded by Candice Patchappen, this social club was created as a welcoming space where senior citizens from Sundowner and beyond can connect, share stories, and make memories.

The idea for Golden Years came from Candice’s daughter, Peyton, who noticed how her grandmother, Loretta, felt isolated while her family was busy during the week. “She always seemed to be at home, with not much to occupy her time. We realised she wasn’t alone. Many others in her age group must feel the same,” Peyton said during her opening speech. She went on to explain that the club’s mission is to provide a place where older adults can reignite their spark, celebrate life’s journey, and enjoy activities they once loved.

At the opening, Peyton shared the Patchappen family’s vision for the club. “We want this to be a place where laughter, friendship, and shared experiences flourish. Life is a journey, and at every stage, there’s something worth celebrating,” she said. The club offers a range of activities, from dancing, to arts and crafts, creating a vibrant environment that brings members together to enjoy each other’s company.

A special thanks was given to those who contributed to making the club a reality. Mahadi Phasha, who played a vital role in setting up the business, worked tirelessly to bring the club’s vision to life. Vair-Waradom Rueangchit, who crafted the club’s website, ensured that Golden Years could reach the community online. Phoenyx Patchappen, the talented artist of the family, brought the space to life with her art, symbolising the warmth and community spirit that Golden Years aims to foster. Peyton also praised her grandmother, Loretta, whose dedication and love for family inspired this journey.

Candice expressed her gratitude to her team. She thanked her daughter, Peyton, and Mahadi, for their hard work assembling furniture, overseeing the setup, and managing the business’s logistics. “I’m so proud of you,” Candice said with warmth. She also praised Peyton for managing media and speaking at the event, and Phoenyx for her artwork and support in setting up the space.

With the support of friends Rowena Dayaram, Ronell Singh, and Vijay Singh, the Golden Years Social Club is ready to offer Randburg’s elderly a new place to call their own, ‘Home away from home’, as Peyton would put it. Here, members can feel alive, swap stories, laugh over games, and make new friends.
