Robindale residents continue to suffer from unattended sewage leak
It has been two weeks, and Johannesburg water has not attended to the sewage leak that is causing frustration for Robindale residents
Sewage continues to run down Esmaralda Crescent in Robindale weeks after reports and escalations from the residents and ward councillor.
The leak is coming from a blocked drain, running down the road in front of residents’ gates to a manhole. Cars drive on the sewage, taking it into their garages, and surrounding residents are suffering from the stench.
Resident Marius De Wet explained that the leak started two weeks ago. It’s not a result of rain or any other factor, but rather due to blockages.

He said that his main concern is the health risk this problem presents to them. “I run a business from home that does catering. My garage is filthy at the moment with all the residue. So, it’s a real big problem, and the frustration is that it doesn’t matter how many times you log calls, they keep on telling you it’s escalated.”

He added that this happens every couple of months and takes weeks of begging to get it fixed. “We get references, but tickets continue to be closed. All escalations falls on deaf ears. Our ward councillor is also not able to do a thing. We are into two weeks now, and this is a serious health crisis.”

Ward 99 councillor Hendrick Bodenstein confirmed that he is aware of the issue and has been pushing to have it sorted. “I am frustrated, like the residents. These issues need to be attended to quickly, but it’s not happening. I have escalated this many times, but there has been no response from Johannesburg Water.”
Nolwazi Dlamini, of Johannesburg Water, acknowledged that inquiries were received, noted, and were sent to the depot for a response. More updates will be published once made available.
