Zandspruit community marches for change

Tired of being ignored, residents of Zandspruit took to the roads, calling on the premier and mayor to fix power, sanitation, roads, and housing issues.

Zandspruit residents gathered in numbers this morning to march for improved service delivery, demanding action from the Gauteng premier and the Johannesburg mayor.

Despite the cold, people began assembling, holding signs and chanting as they walked from Zandspruit to the Honeydew Police Station. They were accompanied by officers from the Honeydew Police Station and members of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), who helped ensure the march remained peaceful and orderly.

Ward 114 councillor David Mangena led the march and addressed the crowd, thanking everyone for their discipline and for showing up, despite the freezing weather. “Thank you for not causing any damage or chaos. This is for Zandspruit, not for me, not for any individual, but for the entire community,” he said.

The march follows years of frustration over poor service delivery. For the past three weeks, waste removal services have been absent, leaving residents surrounded by unserviced toilets and foul odours. Power supply is unstable, but requests to Eskom for repairs have been ignored.

Mangena also raised concern over 701 incomplete housing stands, some allegedly being sold to outsiders. The area’s roads remain in poor condition, with no upgrades in two years, and a lack of lighting linked to rising crime.
