Shalen Ramduth warns of hidden heating dangers

As temperatures drop, Netcare 911 warns that common heating methods can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning and burns if proper safety steps aren’t followed.

As the winter chill sets in across Randburg, Netcare 911 is warning residents to stay alert to hidden dangers while trying to keep warm.

Shalen Ramduth, Netcare 911’s operations director, says carbon monoxide poisoning is a real risk in poorly ventilated homes. “Gas, charcoal, petrol, or wood fires can release carbon monoxide, a toxic gas with no smell or colour,” he explains. “It can cause dizziness, nausea, confusion, and in severe cases, even death.”

To prevent this, he advises:

  • Always allow for ventilation when using gas or wood fires.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Never leave heaters or fires burning overnight.
  • Have gas appliances professionally installed and serviced.

Ramduth also warns about the risk of burns, especially among children and the elderly. “Keep an eye on children around heaters and fires, and switch them off before bedtime,” he says.

If someone gets burnt:

  • Run cool water over the burn for 20 minutes.
  • Cover it with a clean, wet cloth or burn dressing.
  • Don’t use ice.
  • Call an ambulance if the burn is serious.

Slips and falls are another winter danger, especially on icy mornings. Ramduth suggests wearing layers to trap body heat and help avoid hypothermia or frostbite.

“It’s also wise to keep a first aid kit at home, at work, and in your car,” he adds. “And if you need help quickly, use the Netcare App to call for emergency support fast.”
