PETCO general manager shares tips to boost recycling

Recycling helps protect the environment, reduces landfill waste, and supports job creation in South Africa’s green economy, says PETCO general manager of recycling and collection Samu Mkhize.

Recycling is one of the easiest ways Randburg residents can help protect the environment and grow the economy, according to Samu Mkhize, general manager of recycling and collection for PETCO.

“Recycling conserves natural resources, reduces pollution, and limits the waste that ends up in landfills. It also supports South Africa’s green economy by creating jobs, especially in the informal sector, where waste pickers play a crucial role.”

Many everyday items are recyclable, including PET plastic bottles and jars, Tetra Pak cartons, paper, cardboard, glass, and aluminium cans, but not everything belongs in the recycling bin. Items contaminated with food, chip packets, and certain mixed materials are often unrecyclable and may spoil entire loads.

Once collected, recyclables are sorted, cleaned, and sent to manufacturers who turn them into raw materials for new products. This process reduces the demand for virgin materials and cuts down on harmful emissions.
“Households and businesses can make a big impact by sorting recyclables, keeping them clean, and dropping them off at collection points,” adds Mkhize.

Some of the key challenges to recycling in South Africa include: poor infrastructure, a lack of awareness, and packaging that is not designed for recyclability, but, with the right habits and public support, these issues can be addressed.
