Cosmo City residents burn car after hit-and-run incident

A community’s frustration boiled over in Cosmo City when an alleged hit-and-run left a child injured, and residents retaliated by burning the driver’s car.

Residents in Cosmo City Ext 4 took matters into their own hands, on July 5, after a vehicle allegedly struck a child and the driver fled the scene, abandoning the car.

According to community members who witnessed the incident, the child was hit near a stop sign within the extension.

Outraged by what had happened, a group of residents is said to have gathered at the scene and later set the car on fire. Videos and photos, shared on social media, show the vehicle engulfed in flames, with community members watching on.

At the time of publishing, police had not yet officially confirmed the details of the incident, including the condition of the child, the identity of the driver, or whether any arrests had been made.

A media query has been sent to the South African Police Service (SAPS), and this story will be updated once a response is received.
