Wildlife homes boost biodiversity in greenbelts

The RRVA is installing owl and bat boxes in Randpark Ridge greenbelts, helping control pests naturally and restoring balance to the urban ecosystem.

The Randpark Ridge Village Association (RRVA) is leading an exciting greenbelt project by installing owl boxes and bat hotels across the area. This forms part of the RRVA’s long-term commitment to protecting the local ecosystem and encouraging natural pest control.

“These owl and bat boxes are more than just wooden shelters; they’re part of our vision to keep the greenbelt as natural and healthy as possible,” says RRVA admin Nerisha Govender.

Owls, especially barn owls and spotted eagle owls, are powerful allies in controlling rodent numbers. A single owl can eat up to 1 000 rodents a year. By installing owl boxes in suitable locations, the RRVA is creating safe nesting sites that encourage these birds to remain in the area, thereby reducing the need for harmful pesticides.

Bats, too, are vital. They consume hundreds of insects per hour, including mosquitoes and crop pests. Urban growth has reduced their natural roosting spaces, but the RRVA’s bat hotels give them a place to rest and raise their young safely.

“These efforts support biodiversity, reduce the need for chemicals, and help restore balance in our greenbelt,” Govender says. “We are proud to take the lead in creating thriving corridors for wildlife in the heart of our suburb.”

The RRVA encourages residents to support the project and learn more about these incredible species. A helpful Batty About Bats info sheet is available for anyone interested in getting involved or understanding more.
