Sharonlea base racer tests a new Ginetta G40 Junior
Michael Kernick, a driver from Sharonlea, got the opportunity to race a Ginetta G40 Junior at Redstar Raceway.
Michael Kernick, from Sharonlea, was offered an opportunity, by Rok Cup, to test their new South African Ginetta G40 Junior.
The Ginetta series is popular and competitive in the United Kingdom. It introduces young kart racers to main circuit racing, helping them develop into better racing drivers. It also opens doors for them to go race in other racing categories, going on 22 years.
Kernick explained that he was very nervous in the build-up to the test at Redstar Raceway. “I didn’t know what to expect. I’ve never driven a car with a 6-speed sequential gearbox. When I stood next to it, I couldn’t believe how small it was. It was cool.”

He had to adapt quickly on the track, to be able to push for faster lap times. “I pulled onto the track, and did my best. I felt right at home in the car and was able to start pushing for faster lap times. The more laps I did, the more I smiled. It was just such an awesome experience.”

He added that the car was on similar tyres to what he races on in the historic single seater category, and that added to the car being easy to understand. “The feeling you get when driving, and using the sequential gearbox, is mega. You have to be very positive when you change gears for it to work. It reminds you that there is a fair responsibility involved in driving the car well.”
Kernick thanked Rok Cup South Africa for the opportunity to test the car, and for the great help and friendliness of the team. “It was such a privilege to drive the car, and to be a part of that team for the day.”
