Various police operations yield good results

The Johannesburg District Police operations aimed at fighting the high crime rate by targeting hotspot areas.

Johannesburg District Police apprehend over 500 suspects and recovered firearms, hijacked vehicles, and drugs during operations recently.

The suspects were arrested for various crimes during operations held throughout the Johannesburg District, including Operation Shanela, the station commander’s operations, high-density operations, and roadblocks.

The Johannesburg District Commissioner, Major General Nonhlanhla Kubheka, commended members and other stakeholders for ensuring the safety and security of the Johannesburg community.

She reported that, during Operation Shanela, held around Cosmo City and Hillbrow, police, joined by other law enforcement agencies, apprehended about 117 suspects.

These were for various crimes ranging from possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, to possession of drugs, house robbery, attempted murder, assault to do grievous bodily harm, illegal immigrants, selling liquor without a license, and driving under the influence of liquor.

“The aim of the operation was to maximise police visibility, reduce crime by targeting crime hotspots and high-risk areas, and to address all forms of criminality. While patrolling around the Cosmo City policing area, members of Johannesburg District crime prevention arrested two suspects for possession of drugs, that included mandrax tablets and small packets of crystal meth.”

More arrests were made in other areas, like Diepsloot, Moroka policing precinct, Diepkloof, and Doornkop. Hijacked cars were also recovered, and traffic fines were issued to those disobeying traffic rules.

Kubheka confirmed that the arrested suspects will appear at various Magistrate’s Courts soon.
